Biafra: The Civil War And The Acclaimed “Nigeria Unity” -Okafo Judith Chinwe

“I have taken my time to read some books and articles on Biafra-Nigeria civil war. One thing that kept on reoccurring on some of pro-Nigerian works has been that the war was fought to preserve the unity of Nigeria. In fact, Yakubu Gowon made similar statement after the war. In clear terms, That the civil war was fought in order to uphold the “Unity” of an unholy wedlock of different ethnic groups that is Nigeria.
I have always felt unsettled over this spurious assertion. In that if truly the civil war was fought to preserve the Unity of Nigeria, why the massacres of Ndi-Igbo in Northern Nigeria prior to the war? ( 1945, 1953, 1957 and 1966). Were these massacres carried out to preserve also the Unity of Nigeria?  Now they people that pioneered these killings, which punishment was extended to them to show the Oneness of One Nigeria? Yes, Nigerian government wanted a United Nigeria but failed to carry out the Agreement of Aburi. How then did they showcase the “Unity of One Nigeria”?
After the failure of Aburi Accord, war broke out. Nigeria government in her bid to keep Nigeria one killed millions of the Igbo representing a genocide. Then I ask, who would they have unified if they had killed the whole defunct Biafrans? Corpses? Dusts? Mass graves? Was the war fought because of Unity or oil or envy?
If the war was fought to preserve the acclaimed unity why did the Nigerian Government cede out Bakassi Peninsula to Camaron since the wanted a United Nigeria?
After the war what attempt was made to unify our children who airlifts brought to Gabon, Sao Tome Principi etc. with their families? Some one may talk about the 3Rs but don’t rush to that place because the 3Rs is a big scam. Developmental programs that didn’t ripen into fruition.
Then I am still asking, in what way was the civil war fought to preserve the unity of Nigeria that have never shown signs of unity from amalgamation till now? I hope by now the West that supported Nigeria during the war can now see and enjoy their doddering giANT and her unity?
